The sound of the weasel’s heart beating furiously ringed in the devil’s ear, tickling old B. L. with glee. What a deal, oh what a deal!

The weasel’s footsteps were fast and estranged, scared and uneasy. He knew what he had done. He knew there was one and only one thing to possibly save his soul in time. And time was running out.

Before long the clock struck midnight.

B. L Zebub made his entrance and the lanky young weasel fell to the ground in fear.

“Weez, my good friend,” he said in an oh-so-kind voice, “ready to go?”

“Nao, just wait a few more minutes. She’ll be here’. She wouldn’t leave me like this. I sent her the letter and everything. I’m…I’m her soul mate.”

B. L. laughed a despicable laugh of pity. “I don’t see her anywhere. You must be mistaken. After all if she is your ‘soul mate’ she would’ve been here by now.”

Weez was mortified. He looked through the darkness of the trees with tears in his eyes. She was nowhere in sight. Why oh why was he such a fool?

“Now Weez, it isn’t all bad. I know how much a broken heart can hurt. Once you take a step down there you’ll loose all those horrible memories of what once were.”

“Yeah…I-I guess…” said Weez. “I just don’t get why she wouldn’t come.”

“Any idea as to what the last thing you said to her was?” Weez thought about it and hung his head in shame. The devil put his hand on Weez’s shoulder. “You were such a good client. I have a wonderful idea. If you can stay loyal to me, I’ll let you keep that body of yours. You can be my personal assistant, now and forever. How does that sound?”

Weez couldn’t reply. He peaked behind his shoulder at the forest one last time in the hopes that maybe she would burst through the bushes to plead his case. Maybe she forgave him. He thought of his life in the forest with his loving family, all the wonders and hopes he had growing up for a better future. He thought of all the beautiful, handsome, stylish outfits he made just for her and the joy of seeing her in them.

Then presently all these thoughts went away and he was unable to get them back. B. L. gave the him push and he fell, fell, and fell down a dark corridor.

Then he hit the ground beneath him. He had no idea what he was worrying about, where he had been before or what he wanted. All he knew was that the ground beneath him was burning and that B. L. Zebub was standing over him.

“Anything you need boss?” he asked, trying to avoid the flames as though he had done this many times before.

“Walter?”

“Aggy, my sweet angel,” Weez said as he welcomed the mink inside his lounge. “Come in, come in.”

“Thank you Walter,” said Aggy calling him by his proper name.

Aggy sat herself down on her couch where Weez sat himself next to her and talked endlessly about his recent prowess as a fashionesto. How his work would be acclaimed for decades after it was finished, how he would go down in history as one of the greatest artists of all time. All the while he paid no mind to his girlfriend’s clear disinterest in what he was talking about.

“Walter that’s all good and done but I must ask, why did you ask me to meet you here?” Aggy asked.

Weez choked up a bit. “I’ll get to that in a second,” he said nervously looking at his girlfriend. She was all he ever wanted in the world. Beautiful, smart, a lover of the finer things in life just like him. She deserved only the best and he was going to be just that. He got down on one knee, pulled a tiny box from his pocket and presented his sweetheart with a diamond ring. “Now that I’m at the top, you can be mine forever,” he said. “I got this just for you Aggy.”

Aggy was stunned. “Oh…Walter…I really don’t know what to say. I’ve never seen anything so beautiful!”

Weez turned the conversation back to his career and the other thing he desired more than anything else in the world: fame. “Well this little trinket will get a lot snazzier once I hit it big in New York, then we’ll be able to replace it with something a lot nicer. Your gonna be the top of the top baby. Not that you weren’t that already but this time you’ll be top of the top with me! Diamond rings’ll be worthless far as you’re concerned.”

Aggy took the ring case in her hands and looked it over very carefully. Then she looked back at Weez who was smiling a triumphant smile. The kind of smile you’d make when you won an enormous amount of prize money at the county fair and not the kind you give someone you want to marry. A smile that could never be more different than the one he gave her the day they first met, a smile of true, honest infatuation.

“Weez I am honored. But I can’t take it,” she said.

Weez’ triumphant smile disappeared. “Wha…I…but why?”

“I think you’re more in love with the idea of me being your wife then…well…me.”

Weez stood up, furious. “Are you serious? I have everything! I can do anything now! I’m all you ever wanted and you say no?”

“But that’s just it Weez you were all I ever wanted,” she said, “you still are deep down. I just don’t want to deal with all this superficial stuff. Maybe we can get married after you go to New York. You know, when things have settled down?”

The enraged weasel stood up, pounding his long legs in the ground. “You have no idea what I went through to get this far! I’m successful! I’m finally living my dreams! That’s not enough for you is it? It’ll never be enough for you! Married after New York? How about married never.”

Aggy tried to defend herself. “No! I am happy for you I just wish you weren’t as concerned about your career. I wish you would just listen to me!”

“I don’t need to listen to you! I don’t need you and never will! All you’ve done is hold me back! Get out!” When the mink refused to leave Weez took her by the arm and walked her over to the door. He flung her so hard against the wall outside that she started to cry.

In the back of his brain there was a part of Weez that was looking on in horror at what he just did. It was the part that was wondering if she was right, guilty that he just hurt her and knowing all to well that she wouldn’t listen to his apology. Yet that tiny part of him in the back of his brain was powerless against his ambition. Instead of helping her up or pleading to her for forgiveness, he threw the ring at her feet and said, “I’ll still leave you a ticket if you wanna catch my show in New York. It’ll be the night of my greatest triumph. Maybe then you’ll get an idea of what you’ve lost.”

“Pretty? She’s the most beautiful thing in the universe. I’d die for her, I’d kill for her. I’d lie, I’d cheat, I’d do anything for Aggy Angel Mink,” said the scrawny, love-struck weasel as he was explaining his dilemma to this strange, intimidating creature claiming to be the head of a fashion and design company.

“Anything hmm?” asked the reptilian beast.

“Oh yes! I mean Aggy is like my soul mate. I just know it!”

“Ah my little love-struck friend, even soul mates must fight to be together. Do you honestly expect a lady as rich and as grand as you make her up to be would fall for you?” asked the creature.

With a heavy heart Weez replied, “I am gonna try to make a life for us…I mean…once I hit it big with my store and make the newest look everyone, and I mean EVERYONE’s got to have. She’ll just have to have me then.”

“Ah…and how do you expect to make it big as a designer?”

Weez shrugged and answered with what every artist tells themselves. “I guess by working from my heart.”

Crash bandicoot is an extinct bandicoot, known from fossils located at the Riversleigh World Heritage Area in northeast Australia.

Taxonomy

The primary etymology is a reference to the eponymous character of the video game franchise Crash Bandicoot, and the gender of the genus name Crash is stated to be masculine.

The description for a new species of Riversleigh fauna was published in 2014, the authors proposing the specific epithet for the resemblance to the modern peramelid family of bandicoot and the generic term "crash" for the unexpected appearance of the taxon at a Riversleigh site from the Miocene epoch. The authors state this secondary allusion is to the species "crashing" out of a region of wet rainforest and radiating in the semiarid to arid habitat favoured by the modern species of bandicoots.
