New Humans

I have mentioned that The Iron King was the last confirmed human. However rumours of new, unconfirmed humans circle gossip groups and idle chatter. At the time of writing, the buzz is around The Grove’s Princess Ivy. After conquering the Sands so soundly and so quickly. And bringing never before seen tactics to the battlefield.

In years past, we’ve thought Guild leaders were humans when they managed to push through Slavery reform. We’ve thought local heroes might continue and show their humanity to the world. We’ve even thought the Iron Prince may be one, after becoming the first Mon to ever kill a human.

Our gossip, much like our history. Runs itself in circles. The collective consciousness believes that humans change the world with their actions. And because of that, we believe that anyone that changes the world has to be human.

And thus, the world continues on it’s dysfunctional cycle. I’d like to suggest a new line of thought. Humans don’t change the world, BELIEF does. It is because we force humanity onto great Mons, that we can continue to believe Mons are truly helpless. And it is that helplessness that is exploited by our society, it is what keeps our caste locked in place. Legends of humans aren’t just stories, they are weapons wielded by powers to snuff out resistance. If only one extraordinary human Hero can change the world, the only thing an insignificant individual like you can do is obey.

But if belief can work this way, it can work in the other. That’s why I’m writing this book. If enough people believe they can change the world, then maybe they might start to.

Humans write, we listen…

This saying seems odd in this context. This being a book read by you, a pokemon. Written by me, another pokemon. But this saying comes from a time when literacy was kept to a select few mons, often taught by the current human hero and their inner circle of mons. While now most nobles and guilders are able to read and write, the central concept of the saying still holds true. Humans lay down the framework for what the world is to be, and we simply follow it.

All life shaping ideas have historically come from humans; farming, iron, and yes, even the written word. One can argue humanity has given us more than the scales of Balance, or the Drought down in the Sands, even Arceus above it all. Not only coming to advert crisis, but laying down what life will look like for generations to come. These acts have certainly earned them worship in the same caliber as our gods. Many still hold out hope that one will come to save us.

Because that’s what they do. They come, they fix everything, and then they leave.

At least, most of them leave. The last confirmed human, the Iron King, managed to find a way to stay. To stay long enough to forge terrible armouries of Iron. To unite the entire continent under the rule of his empire. And following his death, that empire broke into the kingdoms we know today; The Snows, The Grove, and The Sands. Of course the last is arguable at this point. But even Freed from central rule, all kingdoms still uphold the tenets of the old empire. Free to rule, but still listening to their long dead human.

It’s been 90 years since the Iron King’s death. 90 years of a Manmade disaster in which no confirmed humans have ever arrived to fix. It’s high time to face the facts. We aren’t being saved.

Mons have been literate for ages. But it’s finally time for us to write...

“Haha, I guess so. In that case, I think they must be intelligent balls of gas.”

“Why do you figure, Vee?”

“Well, how else would they fit inside of a Charmander!”

A mix of laughter and charmed cooing comes from the other side of the door.

Vee continues speaking, “Why do you ask, princess?”

“I’m writing about Humans, it seems strange the way they talk about their own world. For all of the Human’s heroism and feats in our world. They’re worlds can seem rather… dull. Without adventure or the type of danger they can rise up against. I guess when I think of it… I imagine Humans probably look pretty dull as well.”

“Wow princess… That really makes me think. You’re so smart, I’m sure everyone will want to read your book!”

“Well… If I ever finish it…” A dour silence fills both sides of the door for a few long moments. “Well, I should get some more rest. Talk to you another time, Vee!”

“Goodnight, princess.”
